The Disease

Dengue or Dengue Fever is a disease caused by a family of closely related viruses which are transmitted by mosquitoes. The fever is painful and debilitating. Dengue generally affects people from the tropics and subtropics, like the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Taiwan, the Pacific Islands, Mexico, Africa, South and Central America, the Pacific Islands etc.

A dengue outbreak causes widespread panic, and governments are left to act on a wide scale to control it. Globally, an estimated 390 million dengue infections occur every year. Out of them, around 90 million turn into illness.

The Cause

The transmission of Dengue Fever takes place through the bite of an Aedes mosquito which is infected with a dengue virus. A family of viruses is involved in spreading the disease. When the mosquito bites a person with dengue virus in their blood, it gets infected.

Dengue Fever is also known as breakbone fever and dandy fever as it has a benign course with symptoms such as headache, severe muscle and joint pain, fever, exhaustion, rashes and swollen lymph nodes.
