THYROID DISORDERS

The Disease

The Thyroid Gland is located below the Adam’s Apple wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). It has numerous functions and controls the metabolic processes within our body. When this butterfly shaped gland isn’t able to work properly, it can lead to disorders which can be small and harmless like goiter to even life threatening cancer. The overproduction of thyroid hormone is known as Hyperthyroidism while the under production is known as hypothyroidism.

Women are 5 times at risk of developing thyroid disorders compared to men. That’s why, SDC advice you to keep a lookout on the symptoms of the disorders and get checked on the slightest hint of suffering from them.

The Cause

Hyperthyroidism – There are several causes for the Thyroid Gland to produce excess Thyroid Hormones. Some of them are:

  • Grave’s Disease
  • Toxic Adenomas, the development of nodules in the thyroid gland resulting in overproduction of thyroid hormones
  • Subacute thyroiditis, wherein the thyroid gland is swollen and starts leaking excess hormones
  • Pituitary Gland malfunctions or cancerous growth in the thyroid, which are quite rare but cause hyperthyroidism nonetheless

Hypothyroidism – Lower production of thyroid hormones results in lower energy levels. There are several causes for this under production of the hormones, of which a few are:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the thyroid tissues are attacked by the body, causing their death and stoppage of hormone production
  • Removal of the thyroid gland, either by surgery or chemical destruction
